Dr. Katharina Dann
Pianist KATHARINA Dann holds her Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Piano Performance from the University of Houston Moores School of Music as a student of Tali Morgulis. Katharina received her Master's Degree from the University of Houston in 2014. In 2011, she received a B.M. in Piano Performance from the University of Connecticut in 2011. During her time at UConn she was a student of Neal Larrabee, Minyoung Lee and Irma Vallecillo. Previously, Katharina studied with graduate students of piano at Yale University, including Anne Louise-Turgeon, James Lent, Dimitri Novgorodsky, and Qi Liu.
In 2005 Katharina was selected in competition to perform Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue with the New Haven Symphony Orchestra and was also a winner of the Concerto Competition for Young Musicians of the Hamden Symphony at Quinnipiac, where she performed Mendelssohn’s Piano Concerto No 1 in g minor. She was also invited to perform Villa-Lobos’ Impressões Seresteiras, from the Ciclo Brasileiro, at the Portuguese World Music conference at Yale University in 2006. Katharina speaks Portuguese fluently and travels frequently with her family to Brazil, where she participated in the 2008 1o Encontro de Pianistas in Paraty, RJ, studying with Mauricy Martin and Sergio Gallo, and in 2010 she was a winner of the IV Concurso Nacional Jovem Destaque in Rio de Janeiro, performing Haydn Sonata Hob. XVI/52 and Villa-Lobos’ Prole do Bebé No 1. In spring of 2010, Katharina was a chamber music coach for the (JOY) Jorgensen Outreach for the Youth program at the Community School of the Arts at UConn. Katharina was a winner of the UConn Concerto Competition, and performed Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No 1 in C major in December, 2010.
In May, 2012 she received her Performer’s Certificate at UConn studying with Irma Vallecillo. Katharina participated in master classes with Dmitry Vorobiev, Larissa Dedova, and Anderson and Roe in the 2013 and 2014 International Piano Festival at the University of Houston. Most recently, Katharina was a participant of Foulger International Music Festival at Kean University with a final chamber music concert at Lincoln Center in New York City, and the Brevard Music Center in Brevard, North Carolina.
